Lift you right foot off the ground and make clockwise circles. Next, lift your right hand and draw the number 6 in the air. Can your foot keep up? Or does it change direction? [IMG]

I've found that a lot of people who play drums can handle this pretty well. It's not too bad if you don't focus on either your hand or your foot and stare at a blank spot on the wall.

Just don't let anybody catch you if you're trying this where you work.

Drummers call it interdependency. The ability to break the dependence on the hands and feet doing the same thing. I still remember the day my interdependency broke. All of a sudden, I could kick 16th notes with my foot while playing quarter notes with my hands. It was truly strange, as I couldn't do it before that moment.

OK, fellow drummers, the next step is to do clockwise circles with your right foot and counterclockwise circles with your left foot.

I might add that the original trick was a bitch for me to do, but not because of poor motor skills. I'm left-handed, you see....

Is something wrong with me? This was really easy to do. My foot did change directions on the first try, but the second try (and every attempt after that) I had no problems.

Even easier. Perfect on the first try.

And more specifically, the best drummers have true four-way independence (all four limbs can play independent rhythms).

I've been trying to teach myself drums for a little while now. My right foot and left hand are somewhat dependent on each other as a unit (e.g., I have to think in terms of kick, kick, snare), but I can operate independently with the right hand while working them (e.g., riding the ride cymbal while maintaining a pattern with the kick and snare).

The problem comes when I try to work the left foot into the equation. If I try to do anything more than a basic step off the high hat, everything goes awry.

How does it happen? I can't make the leap and get my brain to feel the rhythm in all four limbs at once.

I must be special because when I write the 6 with my hand I can make my right foot reverse the rotation to counter clockwise...

I really struggled with this! With enough concentration and enough tries, I finally managed. Doing this reminded me of the "Mental Marvels" from the Vaudeville era. I can't remember their names, but there were performers who could do things like write 5 different words at the same time with their left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot, and mouth. And to prove it wasn't a practiced trick, they would do words suggested by the audience. There was another who could write 10 different letters at the same time from long sticks with chalk at the end, with one attached to every finger...

On another note, I'm really glad I work at home, so I can try this without looking like a moron in front of anyone.
