I just bought a new fan and I'd like to be able to control it with my tv remote. I have a cox cable remote. The fan is a hunter model number 28676 and a remote is a $70 optional accessories so I know it can work. How would I do this?

I don't think it is possible...the remote for my Hunter fan is RF (radio frequency). Your Cox cable remote is IR. You need to spend the $$ on the Hunter remote.

I don't know if this will work, but you might consider getting a separate remote unit like a Lutron Maestro and put it in the circuit powering your ceiling fan. Leave the setting on the fan itself on high, with the remote circuit powering the fan determining the speed and turning the fan on and off. The web site for Lutron remotes has information about this. It's also likely you would need a universal remote that works with both your AV gear and the Lutron unit as well, if you wanted to use one remote.
