What is the consensus on contact cleaners for cables/connecters?

I've been using a product from MG Chemicals on mine for some time now (spraying the female ports on my equipment and the male ports of my cables and connectors).

    http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/801b.html

Does anyone know of a reason not to do this? According to the product literature, it "Protects gold for life" & "Improves conductivity".

    Opinions?

personally i don't believe in this stuff. i've been using some of the same gear for about 10 years now (my old md player) and it has shown *no* sign of oxidation on the rca connections. you're not saying you're literally spraying directly onto the female rca connections are you? i would be worried you'd be spraying that stuff inside your components?

Er... well, yes. I've been using this stuff for PC repair/maintenance for years, never had problems with equipment from overspray (It is supposed to be safe for it), but then, this isn't simply a PC... Hmmm

A word of caution: some contact cleaners are mildly corrosive. I don't know about this one in particular; I do know I have seen situations where contact cleaner took a quasi-functioning piece of hardware and turned it into a non-functioning piece of hardware.

Alot of folks use Caig Pro Gold.

There are also a few contact enhancers out there. There is Walker SST and Quicksilver. I have not used any of these but there are alot of happy customers on all of them.

sorry erich ... don't mean to scare you. if it's been working fine for years and it's designed for pc gear ... then it's probably okay.

me, i would personally spray the stuff onto a q-tip and then swab the rca plug. but i'm just a paranoid fool like that. [IMG]

No worries. But I do like the q-tip idea. Come to think of it, I have lint-free swabs (basically like a q-tip) for printer cleaning. That would probably be even better. I guess eagerness to get going with my new toys always prevented my brain from thinking about it. [IMG]

You don't need to get the spray. Go over to www.partsexpress.com look up Caig and get one of their small bottles with a brush (kind of like nailpolish).

Well if the contacts on both ends are gold plated and you make a connection, just how often do you have clean them?

    Chu,
We should probably ask Lee Scoggins as I know he's the most vocal guy with regards to Caig pro gold. About once a year would be my guess.

I do mine at the same frequency too Shane. Just for the hell of it though.

I use mine once a month and it helps, but you may go once a quarter and be alright.

One of the more effective tweaks out there in my opinion. [IMG]

What do you hear if you don't do it? (or vice versa)
