I am considering constructing a mini PC to be used as a dedicated DVD player for various reasons, the main being that with various formats coming in the near future, instead of buying a new $400 player, a simple $60 drive and an update to the software is all I need. First off, is this a recommended thing to do? Second, can anyone recommend a decent site that shows recommended hardware parts and other things to build a pretty decent PC-DVD player? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are not alone. I watch my DVDs using a computer coupled to a front projection CRT. I get amazing progressively scanned high res images, at a flicker-free and judder-free 72 Hz refresh rate (perfect multiple of 24 fps) which is impossible with any conventional TV and (especially) DVD player.

You will find a wealth of information and support over at this forum (avsforum.com).
