Hey, whats up.

This is my first post. Looking for opinions.
I have a denon AVR 2309 CI, Sony 52" lcd,HD cable box and a ps3.
Would you hook up HDMI into the receiver for the ps3 and HD cable and HDMI out to the tv? Or HDMI direct to the tv and optical cables to the receiver? Or does it make a difference.
Any input helps.

Go to the receiver first with HDMI, then out to the tv with HDMI. It makes for easier switching between sources, and is a must if you want to hear the HD audio from blu ray movies, from the PS3.

A few years ago, before HDMI, the preferred way was to go straight to tv for video, then to the receiver for audio. Folks were afraid that going through the receiver with video, would degrade the signal. That's changed now. HDMI is a digital connection. A bunch of ones and zeros. You either get the signal, or you don't. There's no degradation of signal.

With the PS3, you can go to tv with video, and to receiver with optical for audio. But, that way it isn't possible to get the HD audio tracks from the blu ray movies. All you'll get is regular DD or regular DTS. With HDMI to receiver, then to tv, you can get the Dolby TrueHD and dtsHD Master Audio.

From cable box, it's no big deal either way, since tv channels aren't broadcast in HD audio. But since the PS3 needs to go to receiver first, might as well keep it simple, and go there with cable box too. Then you don't have to worry about changing the tv's input, changing from dvd to tv. So, the kid at BB would have been right 4-5 years ago, but not with today's equipment.
