hi, new here with my first question.
i was reading through many posts, but couldn't really find the answer, so here it is:
i have a Panasonic 50" plasma, a Yamaha RX-V463 receiver and a Toshiba XD-E500 DVD and right now have a HDMI cable and an optical cable running from the DVD-player to the receiver and then a HDMI cable from there to the TV.
is that the right/proper/best way to do the connections or would it make a difference to run the HDMI directly from the DVD to the TV?
the only other device connected to the is a directv receiver, which has a S-video cable directly to the TV and the audio-cables to the Yamaha.

thanks

There is no reason to run an optical cable from the DVD player to the receiver. HDMI carries both video and digital audio.

If you wanted, you could run an s-video cable and audio cables from the DIrecTV STB to the receiver, and then another set to the TV. This would simply component switching and give you better sound when watcing TV, but would also require that you have the receiver on when watching TV .

I assume your DirecTV box is standard def and that the s-video output is the best it has? Do you plan to upgrade to an HD box or DVR at some point?

thanks for your answer.

you are right, the directv box is standard and the s-video is the best there is. i don't have a s-video input on the receiver, that's why i ran it directly to the tv. and yes, we are planning on upgrading to HD DVR, hopefully that'll happen soon. since we have the existing directv contract since june 2007 i would like to cancel it and get a new one with HD DVR, that would be cheaper than upgrading.

thanks again

Oh. I checked a review on that model and it listed s-video among the inputs and outputs. And this photo of what is supposed to be the back does show a single s-video connection:

Guess that's what I get for trusting the internet.
