Hi all,
I'm finally getting my first 5.1 AV receiver after years of a simple stereo receiver. For last 2 years, I found a cheap way to run rear speakers & subwoofer on a 2 channel receiver; by connecting a 2.1 PC speaker set to the Tape Out RCA jacks. I have a nice set of Altec Lansing's with subwoofer and this gives good sound with an ordinary pair of stereo speakers driven by the receiver's normal speaker output.

Once I get my surround sound receiver, can I connect the Altec Lansing 2.1 set to the Subwoofer Out RCA jack? I'd expect the receiver's crossover would make the 2 small satellite speakers useless, but I like the AltecLansing subwoofer. This would save me the expense of buying a subwoofer. As it is I expect to buy 2 rear speakers and a center.

Should work fine. The subwoofer low level signal from a receiver (RCA jack) is fundamentally the same 0.7 volt or so level signal as the tape output signal except for having the middle and high frequency content filtered out.
