Hey everyone. I'm relatively new to the modern home theater worldand I just recently bought a new Yamaha RX-V567 AVR in a 6.1 surround sound setup and am having trouble locating an answer to a question I have concerning how to use it. I'm sure I'd have the same question with whatever brand I would have bought so here goes. I have both the cable and my PS3 (which I use for gaming, DVD's and Blu-Ray's) hooked up using HDMI inputs then outputted via HDMI to my Samsung HDTV. This receiver apparently has all the latest surround sound decoding capabilities but I'm not sure how to use them. My question is, how do I use all that decoding capability? Does the receiver automatically choose which format to use when I watch TV, movies or play a game based on the type of encoding the source has? It allows me to chose some of the decoders but not all of them myself by changing the settings with a button on the remote. I can choose Pro Logic, PLIIx movie, PLIIx music, PLIIx game, Neo 6 Cinema and Neo 6 Music. I understand that these decoders basically take a 2 channel source and matrix the sound into multiple channels. There is also a straight mode and a direct mode available as well. The direct I think I understand gives basically a 2 channel Hi-Fi sound. The straight mode I'm confused about though. Is this the setting I should use to have the receiver decode the surround sound encoding from whatever source I'm using (Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD, etc...)? Please help if you can. Thanks.
