It's bad enough they didn't color time and edit the sound properly, now the new 1-disc edition will have the entire film put on ONE DISC.

I guess this edition should be called Lawrence of Arabia: Disgrace Edition

Compression artifacts? It's a MIRAGE! [IMG]
I assume they are making this DVD18, which theoretically shouldn't be any worse than the old disc.

Normally someone taking a page out of Fox's book as far as DVD's go would be a good thing, but not this time.[IMG]

They are doing it with a few other titles too, Final Fantasy for one. Can't remember the others.

Well, I made this prediction in one of the limited edition threads we've had here before. Oh well, it will probably turn out like the BORK disc.

Does anybody know if this means the two-disc sets will be going OOP?

From the announcement, it didn't seem like the disc was going to be a DVD-18. These are all 1-disc editions, most of them just the first disc of previous 2-disc editions, and they're retailing for $19.95, and I don't think they'd release a DVD-18 at that low a price.

Welcome to Compression Hell, population: Lawrence Of Arabia!

They could remove alot of extraneous material from the current Lawrence like the musical prelude and intermission and probably fit it on one disc with little degredation in quality.

    Butchery? Maybe...

If execs from Columbia were to come down from their exhalted palace and actually consult and fix all of the problems in the current dvd version of Lawrence, they would then be in a perfect position to create the perfect Lawrence single disc version.

The film could be shorn of its overture, entr'acte, intermission, exit music and the film cut down to a dvd-9 manageable 187 minutes or so.

Then via flix-fx or generic pan and scan the film could be made to properly fit a standard television screen without those annoying black bars.

Will this new edition be pan and scan? [IMG]
Eric, "They could remove alot of extraneous material from the current Lawrence like the musical prelude and intermission and probably fit it on one disc with little degredation [sic] in quality."
Spoken like a true film enthusiast.

i'm confused about something...wasn't apocalypse now: redux released on one disc by paramount? isn't that in itself a 3 and a half hour film? and did it not look great? can someone please explain to me how this doesn't disprove what most of you are predicting will be a new compression-filled disc of lawrence of arabia?

Justin, please keep your personal attacks to yourself. It was mean-spirited and totally uncalled for.

You neglected to quote my last line where I alluded to it as butchery. But it's so much easier to insult someone rather than to read the whole post.
