    USA Today writes:
quote: A special 20th anniversary edition of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial coming to theaters next spring will have new scenes and improved special effects. But when the DVD of the beloved film is released both the Steven Speilberg tweaked version and the original 1982 version will be included by Universal. Producer Kathleen Kennedy told USA Today Wednesday. Film Historians had worried that updating the movie would make it impossible for future fans to experience the film as it first wowed audiences.[/quote]
WAHOOO!!! I wonder if everything is going back into the original version?
This is a must buy for me!

Wow, sounds like sanity prevailed. Very good news, if true.
It would be nice to think that Lucas would adopt such a sane approach, but unfortunately, he's adopted too much of an Orwellian approach. [IMG]

Hmm. Spielberg and Lucas get on so well I wonder if we have some hope of seeing the original Star Wars films when they finally go on release. No, guess not. [IMG]

I was hoping this would lead way to both versions of Star Wars. I haven't seen the originals in so long (I only have the S.E's...) and It would be nice to have both...
Oh well, at least I'm happy there will be both versions of E.T on the disc!

Great news. I'm not the world's biggest E.T. fan, but this has moved from a no-buy to a definite maybe.
Thanks to all involved for the wise decision.

It turned me from a "...definately going to buy but not happy about it" to a "...definately going to buy and very happy about it!"

I can't even begin to gauge how relieved I am. I had been considering buying the ET laserdisc set (the good one) fearing that it would be the only way to get the ET I remember. This is the way to do it. I don't care if a director wants to fiddle with their work, as long as the original remains availble. Are you listening George?

I am relieved by this as well, but the cynic in me wonders if this means the difference between the versions will only be the new scenes and improved effects, meaning that the PC changes like replacing the guns and removing the terrorist line will still be in both versions...
I'd love to be proved wrong though, when Disney released the "original" Fantasia f. ex the PC changes were still in the movie.

    Ron-
It's my impression that these will both be on the same disc. We'll have to wait and see I suppose...
I hope the 1982 version is not the P.C changed version without the added scenes!!! That would defeat the purpose!

    This is great news.
I really hope it's released as a 2 disc set for 2 reasons:
    1) I would hate to see the new version outselling the original by so much that directors won't release originals.
    2) I'd likely want to have both versions.
Every once in a while Speilberg does something to make me respect him further. Good job.

Your speculation is in direct conflict with the USA Today quote. It clearly refers to "the original 1982 version". How could you possibly interpret the word original to mean "with PC changes"?
