I was wondering how this feature works? I'm looking at getting a new reciever and am wondering if this is an essential feature. I plan on having my Playstation 2, DVD, and HDTV tuner all hooked up by their component video outputs.

Yes, this is a very important feature.
Many people are now considering upgrading their receivers simply because the existing receiver does not support progressive/HD component switching.
This thread on the Receiver Comparison Chart is sorted by price. Take a look and see what you get for the different $$ amount.
You can also get an external 4-to-1 switch to feed your TV and receiver a single signal as described in this Inexpensive HD Switching thread.
Remember: Component video switching is one thing, Progressive & HD video switching needs more bandwidth even though they all use component video cables.
    Good Luck.
