    Hi Rajeev. Welcome to HTF!
First, your external HDTV decoder box MUST use component cables to send the HD signals to the TV.
Second, to take advantage of a Progressive Scan DVD player, you must also use component cables.
Third, The 2 big game box's (XBox, Playstation) have progressive-scan output which must use component cables.
So while direct connection is prefered, many TV's dont have enough connections for all the equipment.
If you DONT run through the receiver, to flip between sources you must:
    - Grab the TV remote to change the VIDEO input
    - Grab the receiver remote to change the AUDIO input
After a few weeks of doing this, you will either want to run component video through the receiver, or invest in a universal remote with macro buttons so you can do all the switching with 1 button push.
I even have had lots of people without enough component inputs on their receiver so I have had to research these products for Inexpensive HD Switching .
    Hope this helps.
