Hi Everyone, Dave here. Just joined the forum, and brand new to home theater! I am no audiophile, nor a sonic expert AT ALL. I've also never owned a home theater (speaker) system before. I'm not all that tech-savvy, but I'm also smart enough not to be duped by sales associates at BestBuy/Sears trying to sell me lemons (or maybe I'm just paranoid about salespeople!). Which is why I've turned to this forum for help! ANY advice or feedback would be very appreciated. I'm very excited to be making a purchase of this magnitude, and really hoping to enrich my experience with TV, movies, gaming, and music (maybe). What I have: 1) In a matter of days, I will be a first-time, new condo-owner (yay). 2) My living room has wood flooring, and is 13' x 20' . The TV/system will be on the 13' side, meaning ~20 feet from my eyes to the TV. 3) The gf has left it up to me to decide how we setup the Home Theater (it's the 1 single component I have a say in ANYTHING...yes, I'm happily whipped) 4) 3 yr old 46" Samsung 1080p LCD Flat TV. What I am planning to have soon: 1) PS3 2) Roku? for Netflix? Still torn whether to use my PS3 for Netflix, or get the Roku device...a separate discussion altogether. If I did get Roku, not even sure if it would integrate with the theater system? My Budget for everything (speaker system, receiver, amp?) : $1100 - $1200 I've done a little bit of research, and I've also read a lot of the correspondence on this forum. Most experts (you guys!) seem to suggest to stay away from Sony and Bose. That is perfectly fine by me. QUESTIONS: I did stumble across a JBL speaker system, the Cinema 500, which I believe has an 8" sub. I've also come across the Yamaha RX-v571 receiver? Would those 2 jive OK? Would an 8" sub be too weak for the room size? I'm also hoping to put the surround/satellite/bookshelf speakers on poles/stands. Do I need an amp? From what I've read, most of the mid-higher range Yamaha receivers have decent amps built-in? Or, would you guys suggest anything more robust/efficient for my budget? If you were in my situation, what would be your setup? ANY advice would be so helpful, thank you. I'm pretty pumped to pursue this new endeavor, and I'm sure it won't be without its bumps and hurdles.
