    Hi guys,
Since i'm looking for a DVD player < $300 (more like < $250) and the plus & minus of each player is all over the place, I'm going to try to compile it, and hope it can benefit those who are looking as well. Let me know if I give the wrong fact, and I'll fix it. And feel free to suggest the strength and weakness of each player too.
Here's the criteria that that I'm looking for:
    1. Plays CD, VCD, CDR, CDRW, MP3
    2. Progressive Scan
    3. DVD-A is not a must, but a plus
    4. Scaling or zooming
    JVC 60BK:
    Strength:
    • Great progressive out, no chroma bug
    Weakness:
    • Not too great on interlaced, but some said barely noticeable
    • Problem w/ displaying subtitle in PTM
    Panasonic RP56:
    Strength:
    • Great interlaced picture (using Sage chip)
    • No chroma bug
    Weakness:
    • No coax out (this is important for me)
    • No Zoom / scalling
    • Flicker bug
    • Slow layer change
    Toshiba SD3750:
    Strength:
    • Lots of feature, including zoom.
    • Good (not the best) interlace & progressive out.
    Weakness:
    • Chroma bug (although people say it's hardly noticeable)
    • Bad remote
    • Possible audio drop-out when using optical. (problem fixed when using coax, some still have problem w/ coax) Movie used is POTA, esp. the DTS track.
    • Potential problem w/ MP3 playback
    • Slow layer change
    Toshiba SD4700:
    Strength:
    • Lots of feature, including zoom.
    • Better remote than 3750
    • DVD-A
    • Good (not the best) interlace & progressive out.
    Weakness:
    • Chroma bug (although people say it's hardly noticeable)
    • Possible audio drop-out when using optical. (problem fixed when using coax, some still have problem w/ coax) Movie used is POTA, esp. the DTS track.
    • Some user exp. problem w/ displaying subtitle in PTM
    • Potential problem w/ MP3 playback

Thanks for your analysis, Joel. I am also looking for a DVD player in that price range. Why is Sony out for you? I have been looking at the 600V that also has SACD. I will be replacing a Sony S-300 I bought three years ago. It has performed flawlessly, but doesn't do DTS. Please let me know which player you chose and how you like it.

I just realize this was my 3rd Anniversary as a member of the HT Forum. I remember that when I joined there were only about 1,800 members. A great forum and thanks for letting me be a part of it.

    Marty,
I have no good reason for not going w/ Sony..[IMG].. just preference I guess. And I think Sony stuff is usually priced higher than the competitor.
Right now I'm leaning toward the Toshiba or the JVC. If I go for the 3750, the JVC seems to be a bette player for $20 more. If I go for the JVC, it seems I should get the 4700 for the DVD-A for $25 more... You see my dilemma here? [IMG]
I need to decide soon though as I just shipped my old DVD player today, don't think I can last long w/o a DVD Player. [IMG]
