An Austrian website has published a very interesting, detailed analysis on the changes made by Universal to the excellent John Carpenter and Kurt Russel commentary for The Thing, originally recorded for the laserdisc over twenty years ago. The original, uncensored, commentary was available on the DVD. Despite the standard disclaimers on the blu-rays about "commentaries not reflecting anything to do with the studios opinion blah blah blah", it appears that the studio has actually removed anything that could appear to be even remotely controversial - from Kurt Russell and John Carpenter lighting cigarettes during their chat, to mention of AIDS, race or studio interference. Even Kurt Russell saying the phrase "politically correct" was removed! It also appears that the commentary was originally recorded several times, as there are alternative takes, which have been substituted in the blu-ray version. In addition, the commentary has also been re-edited in places.

There was a recent thread on this forum about Criterion not recording commentaries regularly anymore - it might not just be Criterion saving money, but studios now being terrified of any filmmaker speaking freely!

Yeah I noticed that there were comments missing between the DVD and the Shout Factory BluRay release. There was nothing in the DVD that was really worth censoring.

I’m glad that Kino seems to be including more and more commentaries on their releases. Seems to be flying in the face of other companies withholding or editing them.
