Thanks to Thomas T., I found out that this film, which I have for years been relentlessly campaigning for to get a Blu-ray release in the U.S., is coming in July on a Region B release from Koch Media:

This is one of the finest of director Alexander Mackendrick's nine feature films (look him up -- he's made some real classics), and received a pretty good DVD release from Fox some years ago. It has such a complex plot line (if you look beneath the surface pirate yard) and three-dimensional characters that it offers both high seas adventure and a very interesting psychological study. Stars Anthony Quinn and James Coburn, Terrific, memorable, and beautifully shot, the film was taken from the director and cut by roughly a half-hour (none of that footage apparently survives) to the current 103, but it still works. Very well indeed. I heartily recommend this. And thank you, thank you, Koch!

I posted about this back in April in the German thread, & will be ordering it soon. I've only ever seen it on TV, & that was years ago, so I've never seen it in 'scope. It's only 14 euros, it would cost me more to buy the old DVD!

I have the nice 2003 Fox DVD, where it is presented in both 4:3 and widescreen 2.35 as a flipper. But I am considering this upgrade, as it is such a great film. I was hoping Criterion would give A High Wind in Jamaica the same blu treatment that they gave Mackendrick's immortal Sweet Smell of Success before now. A remarkably high proportion of great films in his relatively small body of work as a director, Man in the White Suit, The Ladykillers and Sweet Smell of Success in the forefront.

Sorry -- didn't mean to steal your thunder. I just never thought I'd never see this on Blu in spite of my pleas, and so did not do a search.

Ha, yeah, things can get buried away if they're just on the, Blu-rays From Germany thread. I suppose the big question now is, will it play on region A players? I know a lot of German releases do even when they state just B. I'm sure someone will answer that question in time.

The Amazon Germany page states that this is a region B release. Again, go region-free, and then no worries!

Have the region 2 dvd of Sammy Going South aka A Boy Ten Feet Tall (1963) and it's one of my favorites from the director. Like to see it on blu-ray.
