GameSpot has an article about custom coloring your consoles. They also install mods and LEDs.

In the set of pictures accompanying the article, you can see a neat little switch on the GameCube for the mods. It looks pretty slick.

My brother did this with his XBoX, now it looks sooo much better. He started with the controlers, and they were so easy he did the box too.

Each controler he did recieved a more and more difficult design... he ended up with 2 solid colour ones, an army fatigue colored one, and a Canadian Flag coloured one(very patriotic of him).

Anyway, I say go for it and paint up ur box, if it doesn't look good u can always get rid of the paint with turpentine. had to do that twice.

BTW, neither of us are very artistic so its not that hard.

OXM had a huge spread on modding your xbox.
Sounds like a good way to void the warranty.
The Xbox is way too fragile a piece of equipment for me to be tearing it apart.

While we're at it let's spray paint our TVs, lower our receivers, and reupholster our speaker grills. Is it just me or does the collectible value seem to go down when you do this? I think my old NES would look stupid if it was any other color than the original.

Taking a console out of the box lowers collectible value. You're supposed to use it and enjoy it, not use it as a long term investment.

Coloring a console is different from putting a mod-chip in or switching the DVD-ROM drive.

Yeah, modding consoles has been real popular starting with the Dreamcast.. i wonder why nobody ever really modded their consoles until the DC.
Anyways, i have a prototype of my DC i was planning on modding, but never had the time to do it:
