It has recently come to my attention -- pointed out, to my mortification, by female aquaintances -- that my teeth are heinously stained, most probably by the amount of coffee I drink every day. A couple of my teeth, upon close examination, are beginning to look "rotted" by staining.

    I'm pretty disgusted.

Aside from quitting coffee, which is pretty much out of the question, what can I do? Anyone try the various whitening things on the market? Mommy recommends brushing with a thick paste of baking soda and water (and she's a dental hygienist, so she should know).

    What about it?

In the meantime, just call me "old browntooth." [IMG]

I can't drink coffee, what it does to the rest of you it does to me x10.
So, are you in it for the taste or just to maintain that caffein level?
Have you considered just shooting it up? This may be legal since the brew is.
You'll STILL have the staining problem, you know, where you fix, forearms, between the toes, whatever....but those can easily be hidden.
    Oh yes, it's a drug.

    "what can I do?"

Get married. When she complains about your stained teeth, tell her you don't care. Odds are pretty good she won't divorce you over stained teeth.

Thats what I do, as I would give up my wife before my coffee (at least some days).

My father uses only baking soda and water, swore off tooth paste years ago, and has teeth like granite. Still somewhat browned, though.

I know somebody who had discolored teeth. She tried those Crest whitening strips and DAMN if they didn't work gangbusters. Shiny white teeth for MONTHS since. Of course, the fine print on the package said something amounting to "don't drink coffee if you want this product to work." Argh!

Would drinking coffee through a straw, and not keeping any of it in the mouth, help? [IMG]

I'd think that just brushing your teeth regularly with any toothpaste would prevent any extensive staining (to the point of looking "rotten"). Especially if you just drink the coffee and don't swish it around your mouth before you swallow like you're attending a wine tasting.

I drink a couple of cups of coffee per day, and brush twice a day, and I don't feel I have any major stains from coffee. My teeth aren't pure white, but most natural teeth are not. And to hear my dentist tell it, my annual cleaning visits are just a waste of their time as there's nothing to clean. [IMG]

The thing about those whitening strips that get me, is usually you see people have clean front teeth and a little on the side teeth, but when you see them fully smile, you start to see the yellow ones a little bit. So it's like it seems it works great but not really. How much does it cost to go to the dentist to get the professionally cleaned?

Is there any other way to take your coffee?

That SuperSmile stuff is expensive! Holy moley, $20 for a tube of toothpaste?!

I'll see if my mommy can get it for me, since she's "in the biz." In the meantime, I'll start brushing with baking soda.

Baking soda, coffee... One step forward, two steps back...

Man, i'm screwed, I smoke cigars, cigarettes, drink tea and enough coffee to float a battleship. I've found that regular six month checkups and cleaning keeps most of it at a "workable" level. As far as cost, after insurance, it comes to about $10. My wife tried whitening and that is a huge hassle, you put the stuff in a mouthpiece and wear it for awhile and it is expensive.

The next new year's resolution I have to conquer is the "see a dentist" thing. It's been some years.

    Sorry, mommy.

Yes, that would be a start! Your first time will take forever as the hygenist has to clean away years of caked on crap. Once you get in the habit, cleanings are ALMOST no problem. Another thing I have found that will whiten is a Soni-Care toothbrush, do not get the cheap imitators, the real thing. I used it for about a month and my teeth got noticed (in a good way) on many occasions, plus those dentist visits get less and less stressful!

How about just using a toothpaste that contains baking soda, like this?

I'm not a dental professional, but I'm one of the few people I know who can hold an entire boat in their mouth.

A dentist once told me that coffee was not a really bad source of tooth staining. According to him, tea and tobacco were much worse. Those and infrequent dental visits. The latter is also a primary cause of my current dental status.

    How about coffee suppositories?
