Both carry an identical datastream, so performance with the two types will be the same.

Optical cables start at around $15.

Some people get away with using standard RCA-jack audio cables for the coax digital connection, which could be as little as $3.00. Others say you need the cables designated as "digital audio coax cables."

If you go for a cheap cable, it's probably better to make sure it actually is labeled as a "coaxial" cable. And of course it has to terminate in RCA plugs.

I use optical.

Keep in mind how many optical and/or coaxial connections you have on your receiver and/or pre-pro. If you have, let's say, three opticals and one coax and all the opticals are currently in use, then you'd probably want to go with coax.
