I saw this last night and thought it was very good. It’s easily the most mature movie Kevin Smith has ever made, and I especially liked that his signature crude humor was kept to a minimum. That might work when your characters and your audience are in their 20s, but when they’re in their 40s and 50s, that kind of banter is just juvenile. Obviously we know that this film was influenced by the heart attack Smith had a few years back, and that sobering event has led to this sobering movie. I was amazed at the level of sadness in these characters, and I think this is some of Smith’s best writing ever. Despite some differences in tone, this is very much a Clerks movie, and fits in with the films Smith has made before.
On the Blu-ray, Smith offers a pre-menu thank you to fans who buy his films on physical media, saying that the studio really takes notice of those sales and they influence more films getting greenlit. So keep buying physical media, folks!
Clerks III is a very solid effort from Kevin Smith, and is easily one of the best things he’s done in more than 20 years.
