Actually Fox That Got Away is a cheap, inaccurate biased piece of crap. Not even close to the clear integrity of Dunne in The Studio. The other guy was just having a field day taking cheap shots. I have re-bought The Studio several times but I wanted my money back on FTGA immediately, and I bought it in a remainder bin! I heard an insider tell a couple funny stories about Streisand and Dolly from preproduction days. Has anyone heard the one about what Barbra wore in the finale?

Michael Crawford's book has a lot of dirt also. Apparently Barbra wasn't the only one Walter didn't get along with (Michael also) Michael also didn't seem to enjoy working with Barbra. After a long series of discussions about Barbra not liking to be photographed from the right side (which held up the scene) Michael replied "Barbra, you're just as ugly from the left"

Love to see a Doc on the making of this film (forget about the fictional"Smash") The dirt on this one is real

Gee, I still have my first copy of the The Studio and will not part with it.

More than once my copy has gone astray, like the time I was held up at gunpoint not far from the studio and they took my studio bookbag, guess what was in it?

(off topic alert) Funny you mention SMASH. Not sure if you are referring to the current TV series or to the Garson Kanin book it SHOULD have been based on... the Kanin book is likely to have a lot of basis in fact. It is definitely geographically accurate (locations of Specific Broadway theatres including the layout and proximity of stage door to front of house, etc) and the fictionized Broadway musical Kanin's SMASH is about is a musical biography about a female star whose daughter is married to the producer of the show. Does that sound just a little bit familiar? Oh and didn't Kanin direct a broadway musical about a female star whose daughter was married to the producer... Yeah. Get the book! Zadan and Meron should have done a movie of that ages ago. Also Recommended: Diary of a Mad Playwright and The Making of No, No, Nanette.

Okay this one is heresay, and I don't remember where I heard it, but apparently the day they shot the Wedding finale to Dolly at that church set near West Point, Barbra didn't particularly like Irene Scharaff's costume. Between shots her holding area was inside the Church facade/set building. There was a call for a take, B got into position and did the shot and Scharaff was furuous. B had removed the gown and shot the scene in the slip, which is what we see in the film.
There was also the I think Life magazine article about DOLLY! reporting about the feud with David Merrick about when they could release it, and an argument between Kidd and I guess the set decorator about pulling out the booths from the dance floor so he could shoot a number. The best remembered quote was something like "people aren't going to pay $3.50 a seat to see some guy gumming down a lamb chop."

Here's what Life Magazine had to say about Fox's battle with Merrick (whom Jerry Herman supposedly once referred to as the Antichrist):

Man, that Google layout is incredibly hard to read! I had to blow it up to be able to read it then waaay too much effort to scroll around. Like trying to read a coffee table book through a keyhole!
The byline and intro notes indicate it's an excerpt from Dunne's book, and so it is, albeit somewhat shortened - in the book it's right near the end, before the premiere of Doctor Dolittle.
The following link is much easier to read: http://barbra-archives.com/bjs_library/60s/life_1969.html
