I'm still amazed that there are so many horror & sci-fi films that are still not available on DVD.

In order to see how many films are still languishing in the vaults, I've made a list of the most well known horror & sci-fi pre-1970 films that are still not available on DVD in Region 1. DOCTOR BLOOD'S COFFIN is public domain so I doubt a major studio will be releasing it anytime soon. There are discs out there by Alpha, Madacy and a couple other labels that don't look too bad but are open matte.

That's a fine list. I really wish more of these would come to DVD, as we're not getting nearly enough. I just watched THE RETURN OF DRACULA (1958) last night and it's excellent. This is an MGM/UA title that I'd hoped would have made their Midnite Movies line.

Great list, Jay! I'm waiting for many of those titles. My list contains a bit more foreign titles. I'm still amazed that Brides of Dracula has not found its way yet. Hasta el Viento Tiene Miedo (Even the Wind is Afraid, 1968, Mexico, Carlos Enrique Taboada) is a masterpiece. Is it out on Mexico? Does anyone know of an online Mexican DVD store?

Ikarie XB-1 (1963, Czech)
The Cat Who Wore Sunglasses (1963, Czech, 2.35:1)
Beauté du Diable / Beauty and the Devil (1952, French)
The Body Snatcher (1945)
The Brides of Dracula (1960, Hammer)
Cesta do Praveku / Journey to the Beginning of Time (1955, Czech)
The Curse of the Cat People (1944)
De Dødes Tjern / Lake of the Dead (1958, Norway, 2.35:1 Agascope)
El Esqueleto de la Señora Morales / Skeleton of Mrs. Morales (1960, Mexico, Rogelio A. González)
Fährmann Maria / Death and the Maiden (1938, Germany)
Hasta el Viento Tiene Miedo / Even the Wind is Afraid (1968, Mexico, Carlos Enrique Taboada)
Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)
I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The Innocents (1961)
Das Kalte Herz / Heart of Stone (1950 - * R2 German DVD has no subtitles)
Kdo Chce Zabít Jessii / Who Wants to Kill Jessie? (1966)
Let's Kill Uncle (1966)
El Libro de Piedra / The Book of Stone (1969, Mexico - RARELY SEEN!)
Una Lucertola con la Pelle di Donna / Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971 - Media Blasters, get it out there!)
Macario (1960, Mexico)
Mad Love / The Hands of Orlac (1935)
La Main du Diable / The Devil's Hand (1943, Maurice Tourneur)
Na komete / On the Comet (1970, Czech)
Marketa Lazarová (1967, Czech, 180-minute version, 2.35:1)
The Nanny (1965)
Night of the Eagle / Burn, Witch, Burn! (1962)

Also missing is Polanski's Repulsion. I'm still hopeful for a criterion release of this one.

Michael - Thanks for the titles. I did not add Sinister Invasion as it came out in 1971. As for Dr Blood's Coffin, I don't see it available for sale anywhere on the internet, maybe it's out of print. I've kept it on the list - MGM put had a widescreen version on Laser so I'm hoping it may make their Midnite Movie line.

Tommy - Repulsion is available, but it's put out by cheapo Koch with probably the worst DVD cover ever inflicted on a film. A nice version is available in Region 2 UK.

Gordon - Great list! I've added Let's Kill Uncle to my list.

A recent Robert Harris piece with a Warners exec in the Digital Bits finally gave a date for the release of the Val Lewton Collection that has been promised for awhile: 2005 (October, perhaps?). That should put a few of these movies (Cat People, Body Snatcher, Isle of the Dead) off the list.

And King Kong is available on Region Two as well, though I imagine a super mega release is coming for Region One in 2005 to coincide with the remake.

rick - The H-Man is a Japanese film which is why it's not on my list.

TommyJD - I've never seen the DVD of Attack of the Crab Monsters. Allied Artists is the company that released it in theaters. Can you tell me where you've seen it, I can't find it at any of the e-tailers I visit.

That Koch version of Repulsion was discontinued quite a while back. I suppose I could get it on ebay for some astronomical amount. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a R1 version.

TommyG - since it is oop I've added it to my list.

Too bad you don't have a multi-region player.

The Wizard of Mars, aka The Horrors of the Red Planet, is a movie i've been wanting a DVD of for a long time. It's not often such inept filmmaking can generate such an interesting final product. Almost effective in its badness, sometimes.:D

Ooh baby; if The Body Snatcher ia part of the Lewton set, I'll be a happy man. Even if I'll likely have to wait a year for it.

Toddy...Tooody...

Ooh...I just gave myself goosebumps!

I think the following nine films will be in the Val Lewton boxset.
  • Cat People
  • The Curse of the Cat People
  • I Walked with a Zombie
  • The Leopard Man
  • The Ghost Ship
  • The Seventh Victim
  • Bedlam
  • The Body Snatcher
  • Isle of the Dead
All of these films have played on Turner Classic Movies.

Do you really think that all nine Lewton films will be in the set? I can't recall a WB box set with so many films on it. Isn't six or so usually the limit? Still, hopefully they'll put them all out rather than split into two parts.

Thanks for looking that up. Even if it only has the nine movies in it (though I hope there will be extras!), the Lewton box set could be the best WB set ever.
