I've been exploring the Hammer's horror productions of 50's and 60's

But I'm just wondering, what fameous american horrors were there from the same time and what were the american equivalents of Hammer?

I'm interested in those films that are available on DVD

    thanks

American equivalent to Hammer from the same era?

Easy answer = The AIP/Roger Corman productions in the early/mid 60's oozed Gothic horror (obviously influenced by Hammer Studios). Most of the films listed starred Vincent Price & were loosely based on the writings of Poe, except for Haunted Palace which was based on Lovecraft.

All are available on double feature DVD's from MGM

    The Tomb of Ligeia (1965)
The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
    The Haunted Palace (1963)
    The Raven (1963)
    Tales of Terror (1962)
    The Premature Burial (1962)
    Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
    House of Usher (1960)

Jim has listed the "equivalent" horror, but you also asked about "famous" American horror of that time frame, which would include some Hitchcock - Psycho & The Birds. Also, Rosemary's Baby, which came out in the late 60s.

Here are a few more AIP pictures available on dvd. In terms of output, AIP was the only equivalent to Hammer.
All are available from MGM's Midnite Movie line.

    Count Yorga, Vampire(1971)
    Return of Count Yorga(1972)
    Blacula(1972)
    Scream Blacula Scream(1973)
    Dunwich Horror
    The Abominable Dr Phibes(1971)
    Dr Phibes Rises Again(1972)
    Cry of the Banshee(1970)
    Theatre of Blood(1973)
    Madhouse(1974)
    Bucket of Blood(1958)

Then there were some films that AIP imported into the US. Some are available in their original European version.
    Planet of the Vampires(1965)
    Black Sabbath(Italian with english subbtitles)
    Black Sunday(1960)

a few Willam Castle films maybe?
i'm thinking more along the lines of something like Strait-Jacket and Mr Sardonicus than Thirteen Ghosts or The Tingler.

Two early 60's independent horror films worth checking out are Carnival of Souls and Spider Baby.
