I just ecently got a pair of Jamo C95 ii tower speakers and I am going to make at least a 3.1 system and maybe go up to a 7.2 system in the future. I am looking at 2 receivers at the moment, the Denon S660h and the X1700h. I am looking at these for 2 reasons, the phono input and the 4k/120hz pass through which is a little overkill as most tvs are 4k/60 but I plan to have this receiver for at least the next 5-10 years is possible. I was looking at the Yamaha TSR400, but I heard people were having a lot of problems with them. What is yall opinion. Should I dish out the extra for the X1700H or go the more budget option.

Unusual for Yamaha to have reliability complaints, but I guess no one stays on top forever. Don’t have any experience with Denon AVRs myself, so hopeful others will chime in.

The DAC's (Digital to Analog Converter) on the X1700H are going to be a little better than those found on the S660H, which , BTW, is a 5.2 receiver, while the X1700H is 7.2. I would go with the X2700H for $100 more than the X1700H, as it is rated at 10 more watts per channel (although that doesn't actually mean all that much). Or the S760H, which is 7.2 and rated at the same 75w per channel as the S660H and is $100 less than the X1700H.

I read that the Jamo c95 ii plays nice with most receivers but how much of a noticable difference is 75w compared to 80 or 90? Would having much more power be worth it in the long run?

It’s generally accepted that you must double wattage to realize a worthwhile (read audible) benefit. Going from 75-90 watts will probably get you something like 1/4 dB more volume, if that – not enough to even hear.

Awesome I am going to try the s660h as it is 100 off and I can get it for about 100 with gift cards and all compared to 400 for the x1700h.

Just remember that it can NOT do 7.x channels. It's five channels (plus sub)...period!

If you want 7.2 and/or Atmos, then you would want to go with the S760H instead.
