The BA at the end of the Denon's model number stands for Boston Acoustics, the mfg. of the speakers, which should be better than those included with the Onkyo. If you're not planning on eventually upgrading the speakers get the Denon, if you are or feel you must have 7.1 get the Onkyo.

If "price" isn't an issue, why buy a package?
If all your sources are HDMI, either is fine. IF not(Wii or VCR), then move up to the Onkyo 6500.
But...
You can buy your own speakers, sub and receiver for less than the 5500 and close to the Denon package...and outperform either.

Hey Brian I would research them both but my guess is the 5.1 system will give you better performance and is worth the extra $$$.

I'll throw out the "lowest cost I can find" and it will still be better than either...
5.1...

total price...
$330 if the surrounds are good enough from the center package and including the 8" sub.
$435 if you want a 2nd pair of SSB1000 and this includes the 12" sub
If you want 7.1...
Increase the price another $75-ish on the AVR and another $65 for an additional pair of SSB1000.
$435 and you have a package that will run circles around the Denon.
