cheapest way to call Spain?Ooh, I know the answer to this one - live in Spain.
Try www.onesuite.com $0.025/min. It's kind of like using a prepaid phonecard in that you buy your minutes up front. To get the lowest rate, register your home phone number and dial thru a local access number. If you dial thru using the toll-free number, it's $0.045/min, which is still pretty cheap.I agree with Chris Dias that the biggest problem in this whole equation is that if you are calling a European Cell phone, a card you buy with 500 minutes, suddenly turns into 62 minutes (just throwing numbers around, but yes, it is that drastic a difference). The bottom line is that unless she uses a landline, there is no cheap way to do it.
A couple of more tips on the phone cards....I've found you will find the best selection and best prices from phone cards sold at convenience stores in areas of town with a large ethnic population. Never, ever, ever buy one of those AT&T phone cards from Wal-Mart!! You can get a much lower rate elsewhere. Also, make sure you do not use them from a pay phone as there will be a heavy surcharge. Having said all of that, you should be able to make a call from a US landline to a Spanish landline for about 1 to 2 cents per minute. Buying a $20 card should land you a minimum of 1000 minutes.
Good luck!
Jeff
I guess the cheapest thing would be a free PC to PC call over the internet.Even better, if you both have access to Ethernet ports that can reach the internet, you could try this: SIP Phone for Free Worldwide Calling
You'll need two phones (one for you and one for her), which will cost $130. But after that initial investment, the phone calls are free.
