Hi I'm building a stereo for my bedroom and need help finding a receiver. The speakers I'm using are 100w Klipsch RB-35's. I don't have a sub right now but may get one in the distant future.

    Would this receiver work well?

BTW I know that one won't take a sub, but other than that would it be alright?

    Thanks

If I were you I would go on ebay and look for a Sony DB930 digital reciever. These thinks pack a ton of power in stereo mode and are available for very good prices.

Are the watts divisible by the number of speakers you're using? Like if it says 100 watts x 5 channels will it put out at least 130 watts with 2 speakers? I thought those speakers were 100 watts but they're 130w

The Sony will work and will make music. In my office I have a stereo system with some old Mirage 290is speakers that I got for real cheap second hand. The receiver I use is a H/K 3270. Not only does it work and make music, it actually sounds good! I would not trade it for any similar priced Sony.

Personally I like the sound and reliability of both H/K and Onkyo over Sony for a stereo receiver. I would buy the H/K receivers that Kyle recommends before I would buy any Sony.

    Mike,

I was going to 2nd Kyle's recommendation on a H/K. I got 3470-Z from HarmanAudio Ebay for slightly less than normal price. Has worked great for my kids bedroom system. I have an older Onkyo 575X that I still enjoy. You should be happy with your sellection.

Try a plain old amplifier with volume controls, or an "integrated amplifier" which has multiple inputs and tone controls. They probably sound better than a receiver at a given price. This is a $200 or so one I have experience with: http://www.audiosource.net/00_amptwo.html

Mikel, You're going to enjoy that Onkyo. My father-in-law got a similar model (the 8211) last year on my recommendation and he's been very happy with it.

I had the Onkyo TX-8511 in my system last year, and til this day, regretted selling that receiver. Short of a NAD integrated amp, this receiver will blow away most HT receiver in terms of sound quality.

Is it really that good? I was thinking of picking one up for my office for 2-channel listening.

The Onkyo TX8511 is no longer on their site as of this morning. Hope my order goes through after hearing all these good things about it.

    Mikel,

You scared me....the TX-8511 (and the TX-8211) is still in Onkyo's product line. Just not available at the Onkyo's online store.

    Angelo,

In my opinion, short of a quality integrated amp like a NAD or Cambridge Audio, the Onkyo stereo receivers are probably as good as it gets for inexpensive amplification. The sound is powerful and yet detailed. I've looked at current stereo receivers from Yamaha, Denon, HK, and Sony, and these Onkyo are the best IMO. Yes, the Onkyo receivers feature cheesy spring clips for speaker connections and no pre-out jacks like on the HK receivers, but the Onkyos have phono pre-amp that is actually quite good.
