Most often, you'll see the phrase "digitally remastered," which is very misleading. It means that the company has simply transfered the film to digital, which is obviously a prerequisite to releasing it on DVD.

"Restored" is another matter altogether. I don't think that Madacy and their ilk have ever restored, as in cleaned up the picture and sound elements, anything.

Caveat emptor.

Let me second (3rd, 4th, 5th, ...?) the Criterion anamorphic recommendation. It is NOT OOP, AFAIK. Anyway, the picture, sound, and commentary are pure delight.
