I am interested in a 7.1 setup with 2 speakers on my back wall BUT I am missing a side wall (due to the kitchen opening) - so I cannot place side surrounds properly.

Can I have my side surrounds (in wall) in the ceiling above the seating area and then have 2 speakers on the back wall.

What would the proper placement be in the ceiling ?

thanks

Armin, how high is your ceiling? I had a similar problem with my back being open to the kitchen. I used Axiom QS2's with Acoustic Research speaker mount/brackets. My ceiling is 8 feet high so the actual speakers are about 7 1/2 feet up, pointed slightly down toward the listening area. Works great for me.

Yes, you can install surrounds in the ceiling, try to orient them so they are not pointing at the main seating area (you want to be off axis for movies unless you use dipoles).

Pay attention to the delay setup in your receiver to correctly compensate for distance.
