I'm designing the HT in my new Great Room.

I have 10 ft ceilings and would like to use ceiling speakers for the surrounds( side) and down the road, when I go 7.1 the rear surrounds. If i purchase a very good quality ceiling speaker that has an adjustable cone, can I do this without any drawbacks at all?

You would be better off using a ceiling mounted dipole (if you have walls) or bipole (if you have a very wide open space). These will help to give you a more difuse sound.
