I am putting insulation in my ceiling joists. They are 16" on center. I have purchased insulation that is about 4" high...while my joist is 9.5" deep. That means my insulation will not fill the entire joist cavity. Should I be doubling it up to fill the hole left in the relatively empty stud? Should I just put it up 4" filled?

What's your goal in insulating the ceiling? Sound isolation? Acoustic treatment? Regardless, filling the entire space is always a good idea.
