    My manual says

"The sound is not output when you play a SACD disc on the SACD player connected to the CD/SACD optical inout jack on this unit. Connect to the analog input jacks."

WDoes this mean the CD optical input is there for nothing? Why couldn't I use optical connections for CD???

    Thanks

you can use it for regular Cd's but not SACD's. Sony won't allow for SACD's to be transferred through an optical or coaxial connection, they are worried about priracy. The only connection approved by Sony to transfer SACD is the i.Link (AKA firewire or IEEE1394) connection. Even though SACD and i.Link are both trademarks of Sony they don't have a player or receiver that does both, but there is a company that does both and that company is Pioneer they released a combo 49TXi/47Ai combo transfers both DVD-A and SACD digitally through the i.Link cable.
