I have an old P233 MMX as a second PC in the house and wanted to get a CD-RW drive. I'm looking at getting a 12x8x32 drive. I know it's not possible to get it burning at 12x, but would it work if I tried it at a lower speed? I'm planning on replacing the PC soon, but if I can get a burner running on it, I won't have a buy one with the new PC.

I had a P166 with a Mitsumi 4x4x24x CD burner for about 2 years, and it worked fine... So if you burned at lower speed, you prolly could get it to work

You can buy a current drive for about $70CAN(32/10/40). Why would you get an old one??

So if you upgrade your CDR will be the weakpoint.

    thanks nick.

brent, I was looking to replace the DVD drive in the pc as well, and an LG combo drive caught my eye. also, the case only allows for 2 5.5" drives and the HD is already taking up one.

ditto that. i had a 266mmx and my old burner worked good enough. i think it maxed out about 4x and i had to try not to use other app's while it was burning, but it definitely worked fine. my compilations were perfect...no funky blips or anything.

I first RW drive was on a P100 and I didn't have much trouble with the RW part (burning CDRs was another matter, but I think I had a faulty drive for awhile)

One of my previous jobs involved burning CDs on 486s (at 1x) which usually went alright.
