I have a cd player that sometimes makes screeching noises when playing discs. It doesnt happen all the time. I had it in the repair shop because it was skipping some (and told them about the noise), and they replaced the laser. It doesn't skip anymore but the screeching sound remains sometimes. What could be causing this? The shop has a 90 day warranty on their work, and will be taking it back soon. Would like to know whats causing it so I can explain the problem better.

Jay,

Where does the "screeching" sound emanate from? The CDP itself, or from your speakers?

If from your speakers, then it sounds as though you may be having problems with digital transmission.

How is your CDP wired to your receiver/processor?

Do any other sources emit/cause this "screeching" sound?

I assume the screeching noise is emanating from the CD player. If that is the case, it could be a mechanical issue. It is possible that something is out of alignment in the transport (clamp, drawer, etc.). Do you hear screeching when you begin playing a disc or does it happen at random after the disc has begun playing normally? When you hear screeching, does it stop on its own or do you have to stop or turn off the player? Finally, out of curiosity, what player do you have? How old is it?

Its coming from the CDP. The sound starts at the start of the disc (or track, sometimes it won't start till lets say track 3). It seems to be louder on certain discs which makes me believe some of my CDs could be slighly warped but they don't have any problems on an other players. It a 5 disc sony player which I bought before I learned of how poor a lot of sonys products are.

Jay, there is probably something wrong with the transport. As I said, something could be out of alignment. What is the model number of the Sony player you have?
