What was the reasoning behind using the three different connection methods. On my AV9000 when you switch between analogue and coax there is a difference. Which is best for CD playback.

Frank, when you use the analog output, the DAC (digital-analog converter) in your player performs the conversion from digital to analog using its DAC. When using either of the digital connections (coax/optical), your receiver's DAC does the conversion. Since there is much variation in quality of DACs, listen to whichever connection sounds better to you.
