It’s been a year this I posted. The theater had some punch-list items that took a while to get done and some “shakedown cruise”, beta events, and some real movie parties to get it fully operational. Now we’re enjoying it weekly for TV, some video games and the occasional movie.

But I have some news to share, in the next post :)

As my 4K upgrade delay continues through its 3rd year, I decided to replace the bulb in my Sony 40ES projector. The bulb was original, six years old, and had 3000 hours of use. That’s probably about 2000 Eco and 1000 High. Bulbs are rated for about 5000 hours in Eco. So I was approaching its lifetime, and it had probably dimmed.

Plus, I’d gotten the notorious bulb flicker starting a few years ago, and as of 2022, Eco mode had become unusable and I was running in High 100% now.

After some searching, I found a third-party replacement for $100 shipped using a Philips bulb. That fit my price target, since I do hope this is a stop-gap upgrade.

Replacing it was a half-hour effort with some anxiety about stripping screw heads, since their factory tightening was a bit hard to over come by hand with their shallow Philips head. Otherwise, it was easy.

And done.

The brightness boost from replacement wasn’t stunning — not as much as I’d been hoping / expecting. But after a couple weeks of use in High mode, I am appreciating the replacement.

So, if you’re a projector bulb and on your original bulb with thousands of hours of viewing time, consider replacing it for a modest picture improvement.

I probably had a similar amount of hours on my prior bulb on my Sony FP, and it started experiencing some lamp flicker. Switching the power mode (from ECO to HIGH and vice versa) would offer some temporary relief but eventually this seemed less effective and I replaced my bulb earlier this year.

Six years and only 3000 hours? It takes me about half that time to reach 3000 hours.

Pro tip. Save the old bulb. You won't know you need it until you need it.

Beautiful room, BTW. I'd seen a couple of pics here and there but never the entire set.

That is very cool. I especially like the sign. I have to admit, a wet bar is a slick thing to have.

I could be tempted to do something like this, except then people might actually want to come over to my house, which is the last thing I want. Of course, I can envision a single, tall La-Z-Boy recliner in the middle of the room.

...yeah...

I wish I was half as old, twice as rich, and didn’t have hearing problems.

Or, attending a consumer electronics show where reps range from expert salespeople to company founders is an oh-so-tempting experience.

JVC NZ9 and Sony XW7000ES demos were good. Both are gorgeous within the room limits (all white walls and lit exit signs).

Also got the 7000 dialed back to approximate the 5000. Which was still great looking.

The 7000 full max laser on a 150” 2.4:1 screen is almost too bright. It’s gorgeous like an OLED in torch mode.

My gut reaction from seeing the intro race scene of RPO a few times on both was the Sony had punchier colors but the JVC pulled more details from dark parts, particularly H’s face and King King’s torso.

I wish I'd known about this sooner. Raleigh is a short flight from ATL.

No Epson LS12000???
Epson is exhibiting, but I couldn’t find it in time today so will be doing it first thing tomorrow. (Epson has three demo rooms and I found the two I didn’t want with short-throw projectors. But got an inadvertent demo of some amazing speakers I’m never going to buy. :) )

Bummer. I thought I’d mentioned it around here, but wish I msg’d you directly since I know you’re close-ish. I think they’ll do it again next year. It’s off to a great start.
