CAT6 wire. What is its common purpose and why is everybody running it in their HT?

    whats the deal with this wire? whats its common purpose and is everyone using it for something other then its intended purpose?

    also all the other "cat" wires as well. can someone list all that are used and why (specifically in HT environment)? thanks

    CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6 are all defined twisted pair copper wire standards for computer networking of digital data transmission.

    Specifically they are the defined standards for increasingly faster network speeds;
    CAT5 & CAT5E are typically spec'd for 10/100 networks
    CAT6 is typically spec'd for Gigabit networks

    All are designed for use within specs up to 100 meters between devices connected.
