I have checked out some sights that tell you how to make speaker cable from Cat5 cable. Is this the same stuff you can get from Home Depot or is there a difference?

well it is by and large although people who go this painful route typically use teflon shielded wire. the idea behind the braiding is to lower the overall inductance of the cable. this though comes at the expense of an increase in capacitance and the teflon is used in order to minimize this somewhat. some amps, given enough capacitance, will choke. unfortunately, the decrease in inductance is too little to result in an audible improvement in sound. nonetheless, if you're of a mind to, knock yourself out.
