This is impossible. . .there's just so many great songs. . .I'd probably make a different list on any given day.

Anthrax - I Am The Law
    Black Sabbath - Paranoid
    Cult, The - Fire Woman
    Def Leppard - Photograph
    Extreme - He-Man Woman Hater

Since it's only 5, I tried coming up with one alphabetically. I suppose one could say that Def Leppard and Extreme aren't heavy metal, but generally speaking, that's how'd I'd classify them.

Oh yeah, if we're going to consider Led Zep heavy metal, I've gotta toss in "When The Levee Breaks."

Interesting to read about what "heavy metal" means to the varying demographics that are responding to this thread. Zeppelin and Rush are my two favorite bands ever, but I'm not sure they classify as "metal", not that it matters. In terms of the leather-clad, power-riff, long-haired stereotype of "metal", my favorite songs would be:

    1. Queensryche - Spreading the Disease

    2. Dream Theater - Pull Me Under

    3. Judas Priest - Heading out to the Highway

    4. AC/DC - Back in Black

    5. Metallica - Sad But True

I've heard this from more than one source, but I agree with the assessment that Led Zeppelin were one of the forefathers of heavy metal.
