Selleck is Las Vegas' New Leading Man
Source: The Hollywood Reporter April 11, 2007

Emmy winner Tom Selleck ("Friends," "Magnum P.I.") is in discussions to join NBC's "Las Vegas" as the fast-paced drama's new leading man.

He would play the smart, powerful, fun-loving new owner of Montecito Resort & Casino, a new character designed to fill the void left by the recent departure of the show's star James Caan.

Caan, who played the head of the casino's surveillance team for four years, recently left the series to return to features.

"Vegas," from NBC Universal TV Studio and DreamWorks TV, was picked up for a fifth season in February and is slated to begin production on its order soon. The show also is looking to add a beautiful female concierge in the wake of the departure of co-star Nikki Cox.

Josh Duhamel also stars on "Vegas," with Molly Sims, James Lesure and Vanessa Marcil rounding out the cast.

It's not surprising given the number of articles in EW and what's been rumored on E! for some time now about this show. It was REALLY disappointing this year and felt very hit and miss like the actors weren't even trying. Cox was told to take a hike after demanding more money and Caan was known to have said he didn't care for the show anymore and the direction of the writing. One was a quote from a Playboy interview and the other from a British magazine/paper. This show was once fun, but got overly dramatic and bogged down with the drama and P.I. type stuff. If anyone saw the season finale, it will be interesting to see how they handle the abrupt departure of those two characters given the ending. It will seem like they just disappeared no matter what with loose ends no one ever saw.

I'm a HUGE Tom Selleck fan though and will most certainly give it a chance if they get him as a replacement.

Not that hard to figure out. Cox shot her dad, so she has to leave town, and Ed gives in to his wife's demands about leaving Vegas.

It has gotten to be a bit of a farce last year. It became almost a parody of itself.

Not so much canceled as reaching the end of its run. It's at 83 episodes right now; another 17-episode season will get it to 100, which is used as the benchmark for a show being appealing in third-run sales (probably to USA and Universal HD). It's probably a nice number for DVD sales, too - enough box sets to extract a fair chunk of change from consumers but not enough to scare them off.

The writers are probably planning on this being the show's final season, although if the new cast members lead to a ratings bounce, they'll probably hold off writing a series finale.

The thing about these cast changes is starting to remind me of ER. That series went through cast overhalls almost every season starting with season 5, and I think that NBC and the writers/producers might be trying the same thing with LAS VEGAS, especially since when LAS VEGAS premiered NBC was preping it to be ER's replacement (until ER's ratings went up almost 40% magically)

Nah, it's probably more a matter of the contract that the cast signs for the pilot generally running for about five years (relatively well-known names like Caan and Cox probably being able to negotiate shorter contracts with built-in raises), at which point every series has to start either giving raises or replacing expensive cast members with relatively inexpensive cast members, depending on how much money the series is making.

ER has weathered its cast changes rather well as they have stuck to the same format for the most part.
Las Vegas started losing me big time this year when they started making the show too serious. If I want a serious show in Las Vegas, there's some show I can't think of on another network on another night (and when I watch CSI I am a little more judicious with the FF button :)
