Casino Royale: 40th Anniversary Edition

Initially announced by MGM for release on 6 November 2007, the new “40th Anniversary Edition” DVD of 1967’s James Bond spoof, Casino Royale, was reportedly postponed until 3 June 2008.

Now, Amazon.com has listed the disc for release this November, after all. The November release is confirmed by distributor Fox’s official store.

In addition to a 2.35 anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 and Mono audio tracks, this re-release of the 1967 film will include a whole host of new special features:

* Audio commentary with 007 historians Steven Jay Reuben and John Cork
* “The Making Of Casino Royale” featurette
* “Bond James Bond” featurette
* “A 3 Ring Circus” featurette
* “More Directors, More Stars” featurette
* “The Big Climax” featurette
* “It’s a Wrap!” featurette
* Theatrical trailer

It is also unknown when - or if - the disc will be released elsewhere in the world.

The disc will retail for $19.98. However, you can pre-order it now for $17.99 at Amazon.com.

I enjoyed this movie when it first came out in 1967 and purchased the DVD when it came out, as well. I personally don't think this movie deserve a special anniversary edition. I can think of a lot more movies in this time-frame that are more deserving a special edition. Needless to say, I won't be double-dipping to purchase this.

Curious that the 1954 TV version of Casino Royale with Barry Nelson as Bond and Peter Lorre which was a bonus and a real treat for Bond buffs on the original DVD release is nowhere to be found in this special edition.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I was informed that this has been cancelled and scheduled for release sometime next year.

As I remember it, the print of the Climax! kinescope in the originial DVD release was incomplete and didn't have the ending. However, the complete version of the show is available now, and should be included.
