I'll be purchasing this day of release no questions asked. Glad to know those suckers who are No DTS = No Sale will be buying a release with inferior picture quality. Well, depends on the Region and country of origin, I guess. Is disc 2 a DVD-5 then? I also agree this film deserves more extras in lieu of the Ultimate Editions.

a couple of quick queries about the Region 3 release, if I may:

1) Does the audio dropout only affect the dts mix, or does it affect the dolby mix, too.

2) Can anyone confirm whether the location captions (specifically in the opening shot, but there may be others too) are burnt-in or player-generated?

I'm hoping the R1 edition will have the picture centred on the screen. The images posted above suggest that the 2.40:1 frame is a little below centre. Not a major biggie but I find this kind of thing distracting.

I recall that the opening credits looked pretty bad in the theater.

How are the extras... especially the one about the Bond girls?

Hopefully all is well with the Blu-ray.

The extras are pretty poor.

Bond Girls Are Forever is just a (very) slightly updated version of the Maryam d'Abo documentary from 2002.

Hopefully I'll receive my review copy this week. I'll check right away and see if the DTS audio glitch has been corrected for the R1 version.

No, the R1 just has three 5.1 tracks, English, French and Spanish.

For that reason, I doubt the R1 will have a different transfer (even though it warrants it).

That appears to be correct. Here is what Sony has listed:

Screen Format(s): Anamorphic (2.40:1)
Language(s): English: 5.1, Spanish (Latin Am): 5.1, French (Parisian): DS
Subtitle(s): English (US), French (Parisian), Spanish (Latin Am)

The Blue-Ray is the same except that it also has a 5.1 PCM soundtrack.

Also:

SPECIAL FEATURES:
• Becoming Bond documentary
• James Bond: For Real Documentary
• Bond Girls are Forever (2006)
• Chris Cornell Music Video

Could someone possibly post uncompressed images of the R1 when its released?

I want to compare it to my R3, if the transfer is any better, ill junk the R3 and get the R1.

However, considering Sony have decided to cram three 5.1 tracks onto the R1 disk, I doubt there is much to gain (image wise) from the 300 or so kb/sec extra space that the dts track doesn't take up.

R3
5.1 English DD 448kb/sec
5.1 Thai DD 448kb/sec
5.1 English dts 768kb/sec

R1
5.1 English DD 448kb/sec
5.1 French DD 448kb/sec
5.1 Spanish DD 448kb/sec

Of course, im assuming here that the R1 tracks are encoded at 448, it could well be they are at 384kb/sec, who knows.

Well, it's not all about the bitrate. As long as it's a different encode then there's at least a chance they used different settings, minimizing the haloing for example. I'd be interested in some uncompressed caps from the R1 as well. I was going to go for the R3 but if the R1 is better then I guess it could be worth a couple of extra bucks.

That much is true, if the haloing was less, then it would be a much better transfer, however bitrate means everything to a transfer imo, for example, with Superman II and Superman II: The Donner Cut, the "normal" Superman II version was encoded at about 1mb higher or so, and you can instantly tell. The Donner Cut, is actually by all accounts, a pretty bad transfer to my eyes, see below...

The teaser trailer is available on "The Da Vinci Code" and I also presume on a bunch of Sony releases around that time like "Click". Over at DVD Talk, a poster mentioned that the longer theatrical trailer was available on "The Holiday" at the very least.

As far as reviews go, here are a couple I've found:

Bummer if the trailer isn't included. I've always loved that particular extra and am always interested to see how the films were marketed.

I just opened mine up and I can tell you, it also does not have an insert/booklet for the movie (though it does have an advert/booklet for a resort). While I could usually care less about booklets, I'm a little disappointed, since every other Bond film has them. They all had provided excellent liner notes and background info.

Sigh. Looks like Sony isn't treating Bond with the same respect MGM did. :frowning:
