Did anyone catch the 10 part (Shown over 5 nights) PBS show "Carrier"? A camera crew spent a 6 month deployment of the USS Nimitz in 2005. It followed the crew from them leaving through everything until its return. Showing the lowliest of crew to the Fleet Admiral. It shows the good and the bad. One thing they show is how many of sailors came from troubled childhoods and how the Navy helped them. Even if they plan on getting out after their 4yrs.

For those saw it. That one guy whose gf got pregnant before he left. I knew as soon as she wasn't emailing/calling him. She was not going to stay with him. But, what was sad is when you hear and finally see her. You can see how immature she is. At the end you see she is going back to the ex-bf. I am curious what happened with her and him.

Here is a link to PBS that gives a bit of follow up to some of those shown...

I think it was back in 2005, not 1995.

Yes, I watched the program. I missed the last couple of eps, though.

By the fourth ep I was really over the music.

I watched all 10 episodes and found it extremely satisfying. I read on another forum that the E3 in question left the Navy and was in West Virginia attending junior college.

The rough seas nighttime Air Wing exercise was a nail-biter of the first order. I'm sure the CAG was second guessing himself before it was over.

I think the guy you're talking about was the one my co-worker was saying he went to high school with. He was the one from Manassas, Va.

It was funny, because we were watching at work, and all of a sudden, he's exclaiming, "I know that guy!"

Yes, I messed up. Made the correction.

Did anyone else (besides that one guy) not know his pregnant gf was with someone else?

Great series! I saw some of it, and am catching up on episodes recorded on my DVD-R machine.

Watched it? I lived it, on board the USS Saratoga CV-60 (1982-1985) and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN 69 (1988-1991)!

Personally, I found the whole thing pretty dull (I missed the night-landing episode though). I would have preferred to see more of the work and less of the socializing and crankiness.

If I feel like watching whiny post-teenagers, the ones on MTV are prettier.

I recorded Carrier and Battle 360 and because they were broadcast in HD the dubbing to DVD-R's produced excellent video. I find it really interesting to learn what life is like on a modern day Carrier and how the jobs of the 3000 crew members are coordinated. Then in viewing Battle 360 you get a good sense of the tremendous amount of stress the crew was subject to fighting battle after battle after battle.

Hopefully, they will film a documentary on Submarines. That would be very interesting to see what life is like on a nuclear submarine.

Total crew was around 5,000. There was mention of the enlisted ranks at either 2,800 or 3,200. I knew there would be numerous officers due to the number of pilots and NFO's, but I never realized there were that many officers on a carrier.

Interesting?
Living through eight years of it bored the crap out of me.
Nothing new to see, limited entertainment options, same 120 or so guys......
