I am very close to building a new house. The plans I have picked out include a Great Room with an opening behind it to the kitchen. I would like to put tile in the Great Room but would that affect the acoustics? Should I just go with carpet? If I do end up with tile I will have a very large rug in the middle of the room.

Yes, tile will have a detrimental effect on acoustics, in my opinion. It is generally a good thing to minimize hard, reflective surfaces, and tile is about has hard and reflective as it gets.

The large rug will help however. If possible you might try setting up the system and rug for an evaluation before the floor goes in. The carpet on a concrete foundation would be acoustically the same as a tile floor.
