This is an odd little trouble. I just picked up a copy of THX-1138 and was having a good time watching when all of a sudden, the captions came on. Now, this wouldn't be a big thing except that I can't see the movie when my eyes get stuck on the words, and, every time I shut off the captions they would soon re-appear.

The captions come on at the beginning of every chapter, which makes for some interrupted movie watching - - -

Anybody ever have this trouble? Is it a fault of the disc programming, or some lovely new feature?

Right. Tell us your player. I had this problem w/ my Sony DVP-NS755P, and I solved it by turning off one of the disc memory options. I can't remember exactly what it's called. There's one option that remembers the time on the disc when you paused/stopped/turned of the player. There's another option that remembers the last settings (e.g. sound, subtitles) on that disc. That's the option that wasn't working right.
