In my research on speakers, I see a lot about the influence of the NRC on various speaker makers. I’d be curious to know whether those here believe that such companies produce speakers that sound too similar, as one criticism goes. And is there a characteristic or set of characteristics that define the sound of NRC-influenced speakers?

Theoretically, shouldn't all speakers sound exactly the same?

The benefit of the NRC study was to develop natural sounding speakers. Speakers that reproduce sounds in such a manner as to be believable and recognizable as the real instrument which produced the sound on the recording. This is the opposite approach to speakers designed to be exciting or pleasant according to the opinion of the designer, such as Bose. This research has found its way into many companies around the world. As an example Floyd Toole, the main man at HK was one of the leading scientists at NRC when the project began in the early 70's.

I think the important thing is that the NRC has an amazing facility for testing speakers which helps the designers.

For those who haven't already seen this perhaps it might be of interest.
