Anyone here familiar with the HP Pavilion 220? I’m considering buying a 2-year-old one from my son since my computer died today.

I know some computers use a lot of proprietary pieces that can’t be changed, so I’m wondering if you can switch out components in the HP. I’d like to install my hard drive, and I’d like to upgrade the stock soundcard to a hi-fi unit that would compliment my Swans powered monitors.

Not familiar with HP Pavilion 220 specifically: but most HP machines in the last few years are standard PCs.

Usually if you're locked into proprietary, it's more likely powersupply.

I would say just about any computer will support standard IDE hard drives and PCI soundcards (you might need to disable the onboard sound via bios).

I have an HP PC at home and I was able to add a secondary HD with no problem. With XP it should upload all the necessary drivers to the new hard drive with no problem. Like Vince said you can add PCI and IDE sound cards with no problem just make sure you disable the onboard sound via the bios. I would look into what type of onboard sound is on the motherboard though as it might have the NVidia drivers that are 5.1 and do a good enough signal for your Swans.
