Can you run a hirez players analog outs directly to powered monitors and a sub? or, for that matter, can you run these analog outs directly to an amp or amps?

hmmmmm. i'm just wondering if, since the player has all the decoders, you can skip a receiver/prepro altogether if you just wanted a 5.1 setup with no processing other than that offered by your player?

yup, should work fine, but might be more complicated calibrating everything...

You need a gain control somewhere in the chain to adjust your volume which is what the preamp/receiver would do.
