I'm a little new to buying classical music, but I really love this piece. I went to the record store and found about 5 or 6 different recordings, which varied in price from $7 to $19. Can anyone suggest a high-quality recording of this piece?

Do you mean his 3rd Piano Concerto, or his 3rd Symphony?

Martha Argerich on Philips (the live one) is supposed to be good.

I have the CD with David Helfgott, the man Shine is based on, playing this. It is very very good. Not too sure about the quality compared to other versions though.

There is a recording of Vladimir Horowitz playing the Rach III available. It's as close to the "definitive" interpretation of the piece as you can get. In short, it blows Helfgott's recording out of the water. I'm not knocking Helfott. I have his CD as well. It's just that as you listen to them both I think you'll be blown away by Vladimir Horowitz's performance.
    Just my $.02.

I've always preferred Martha Argerich's version. That's pretty much true for any piece; nearly everything she's done is worth owning.

Haven't heard it yet myself, but it may be the first on SACD, and at least one reviewer liked it:

Raul, thanks for the excellent links. I'm not sure if I'm an astute-enough listener (yet) to be able to discern a quality performance from a poor one, but I will try to pick up one of the higher-grade recordings.
