Note that it is often the Basketball and Football programs that provide the entire funding for the rest of the athletic department and leads to a great deal of alumni contributions.
Just because there is a focus on athletics doesn't eliminate academic achievement or a focus on it. Pat Garrity was one of the top Bio majors at ND and had acceptances to med school prior to being drafted in the first round of the NBA draft. There are many others like him that are never even mentioned.
Many schools devote time, tutors/coaches, and money to both parts of college life. It's always the bad programs that people talk about. $1 million to the head coach is nothing when it brings in ten to a hundred times that in royalties, attendance, donor contributions, etc. It's also a drawing factor for top students wanting more out of their college experience than 4 years camped out in the library.
